Brother Raimond Rose Faces Allegations In 4 States

A man who taught at Archbishop Rummel High School decades ago now faces allegations of sexual abuse in four other states.

School officials are investigating whether Brother Raimond Rose had any victims in south Louisiana.

Archbishop Rummel is the only all-boys Catholic high school in Metairie. Rose taught there from 1975 to 1976, and then again from 1980 to 1981. Now Catholic leaders want former Rummel students who may have been victimized to come forward.

"It's always a surprise when someone religious is accused this type of activity," said Brother David Sinitere, of Christian Brothers. "You don't expect that to happen to people who dedicate their lives to working with children."

Already, 19 of Rose's former students from schools in California, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin have come forward and accused him of sexual molestation in claims that date as far back as 1966.

"There were no allegations when he was at Rummel High School," Sinitere said. "So there was no reason for us to do any background check other than the traditional check of any Christian Brother that comes in to the school. We have no allegations at Rummel High School."

Sinitere said he wants victims to know there is a safety net in place to offer healing and support.

"If anybody would come with a credible allegation of sexual abuse, we have a procedure in place where there's an objective team that would come in," Sinitere said. "They would assess, and depending on what the data is, they would determine how the procedure would go forward."

Rose, now 77, has never been formally charged with crimes, though authorities from various states have investigated the allegations.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sinitere at (504) 914-0569, or call the victims assistance coordinator of the Archdiocese of New Orleans at (504) 861-6253.
