Archbishop Jerome Listecki in an Internet video, announcing the bankruptcy decision

The Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese has directed its attorneys to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, due to the sexual abuse lawsuits filed against the organization.

Archbishop Jermoe Listecki said Tuesday that the archdiocese is undergoing reorganization both to compensate victims and survivors and to help the church continue its mission.

In a statement, the archbishop says reorganization is the “best way” to fairly and equitably fulfill its obligations.
