The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to the growing expense of pending sexual abuse lawsuits.

Archbishop Jerome Listecki said Tuesday the archdiocese was undergoing reorganization for two reasons: to be able to compensate victims and survivors while also allowing the church to continue its mission.

In November a Wisconsin appeals court ruled the archdiocese’s insurance company did not have to pay damage that could arise from more than a dozen lawsuits involving sexual abuse by priests.

The archdiocese has been in mediation with plaintiffs and may have to pay millions of dollars to settle the cases.
