Archbishop Jerome Listecki announced the Archdiocese of Milwaukee was declaring bankruptcy Tuesday, but his critics believe the only thing bankrupt in the church is the truth.

"This archdiocese is a hardball diocese, they play rough," said Peter Isely, spokesperson for the Survivor's Network of those Abused by Priests or SNAP

He claims the bankruptcy filing has little do to with the church's finances.

"The real attempt is to seal documents. And they'll make that argument with the judge," he said.

14 priest sex victims rejected a $4.6 million settlement from the archdiocese last month.

The victims not only want money, but they believe more importantly, they want documents released that allegedly detail who knew what and when about the abuse.

"I have no doubt that this effort has to do with one thing, keeping their secrets, and protecting their reputations," said Jeff Anderson, a Minneapolis attorney that represents the victims.

Anderson wondered about the timing of the announcement. He says Bishop Richard Sklba, a top church official, was set to testify in a couple days.

Archbishop Listecki denies a cover up. He claims the church has released all information.

"As far as hiding anything, there's nothing to hide," he said. "As arcbhishop, I apologize to the victims, survivors and their families for the harm, pain, and suffering they are experiencing."

Although bankruptcy may delay Anderson's efforts, he says it won't deter him.

"In the end we will press forward with resolve," said Anderson.

Meanwhile, Listecki believes this bankruptcy will take up 18 months to finalize and says abuse victims have until then to come forward.

"It's irresponsible for him to say that," said Isely. "We don't know what's going to happen."
