Archbishop Listecki tells TODAYS TMJ4 the bankruptcy filing won't impact Catholic schools, churches, hospitals and charities. They're legally independent.

But Catholics worry about what the bankruptcy will mean to them. Some hope it will help make the church stronger in the future while others blames the past.

Parishioners at Saint Stephen’s in Oak Creek were surprised but not shaken by the bankruptcy news. Pat Kunde is a life long catholic

“I feel sorry for the victims,” said Kunde. “I do feel they do need to be compensated for what happened however the Catholic Church has to go on and we need to deal with it.”

But down the road, Catholics at Classic Lanes were far more concerned and critical.

Jim Svehlek was raised in catholic schools. The clergy sex abuse scandal has shaken his faith and he believes its forcing parishes to cut back.

“It’s impacted every church,” said Svehlek.

Mona, who didn’t want us to use her last name, was also raised Catholic. She blames past Milwaukee church leaders for today’s bankruptcy.

It’s a shame really; I’d hate to see his happen, said Mona “I think they kept it under cover too long.”

Archbishop Listecki says there is only one reason the church is in the situation and it has to do with the priest who sexually abused minors.
