Belgian media is reporting a priest wanted by Nunavut authorities for allegedly abusing Inuit children in Canada’s North was arrested Monday in Bruges.

Igloolik authorities and Interpol issued an arrest warrant in 2002 for Eric Dejaeger, a 63-year-old Belgium native also has Canadian citizenship, for "crimes against children.”

Dejaeger is accused of abusing children in Igloolik, a remote settlement in Nunavut.

Belgium’s P-Magazine is reporting Dejaeger is being held in the Bruges - a town in the western part of the European country - and is awaiting extradition to Canada.

The priest had previously been in contact with Belgian authorities in September. He was sentenced in 1990 to five years in jail in Canada for abusing eight children.

Dejaeger was born in Belgium and came to Canada in the late 1970s.
