WITI-TV, Milwaukee —

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering the Milwaukee Archdiocese cold hard cash to display its "Blessed Are the Merciful" statue. The statue depicts Jesus holding a lamb and has the inscription, "Blessed Are the Merciful - Go Vegan."

In a letter to Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki, PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich cites the church's recent financial woes as a reason for the Milwaukee Archdiocese to accept the deal.

"Factory farms and slaughterhouses are hell for animals," says Friedrich, a Roman Catholic. "We're asking the archbishop to do the Christian thing and encourage members of the archdiocese to live a healthier, more humane life and show the ultimate mercy to God's creations by going vegan."

As part of the deal, PETA would erect the statue at the Archdiocese's headquarters and would make a financial donation to the church to help the diocese restructure its finances.
