The church could have stopped Brett many times in the last half-century, said Martinelli, now a Milwaukee resident. But only death ended it.

"Brett, like many child sexual abusers among the clergy ... became very skillful at hiding from the law," Martinelli wrote in an e-mail. "Let's remember who taught (him) how to become so effective at hiding -- it was the leaders of the Catholic church itself. ... There is now a well-documented record of leaders of the Catholic church systematically encouraging priests who were abusing children to hide. As a result, many more children were sexually abused."

Twenty people filed complaints against Brett, but it's not unusual for pedophiles to have hundreds of victims.

"Many of us have come forward," Martinelli wrote. "So many more have not."
