A priest working in London's Soho has been banned from working for two years after he was found guilty of sexually propositioning two servicemen.

A church disciplinary tribunal by the Diocese of London said Father David Gilmore, of St Anne's Church, was accused of conduct "inappropriate for a clergyman" including making sexual propositions to two men who were staying overnight in his rectory in December 2009.

According to a story published by the Press Association, the rector asked the men to sleep with him in his bed and entered one of the servicemen's rooms naked, when it was "unnecessary" for him to do so and when he knew that sexual activity was taking place between the two men.

A tribunal found the conduct of Father Gilmore as "unbecoming or inappropriate" to the office and work of a clerk in Holy Orders.

A statement from the Diocese of London said: "He has been removed from office with immediate effect and will be prohibited from exercising ministry as a priest for two years."
