Catholic Central High School head football coach and social studies teacher Gregg Bahen will return to his classroom teaching duties Tuesday.

Bahen had been placed on administrative leave with pay on Dec. 16 after Monsignor Kurt Kemo, vicar general of the Catholic Diocese, announced allegations of physical abuse had been filed against the coach.

The diocese announced today Bahen will be permitted to return to the school as a coach and teacher.

According to Diocesan Spokesperson Pat DeFrancis, "Monsignor Kemo conducted a full investigation into the allegation, which included interviewing witnesses, under oath, and meeting with a response team, set up to review testimony and discussing the alleged incidents. As a result, Monsignor Kemo said that the response team concluded that the incidents brought against Bahen did not rise to the level of what constitutes child abuse, as outlined in a legal or clinical definition. Members of the response team included the vicar general, a clinical counselor with expertise in child abuse and a high school principal."

Kemo had initiated the administrative leave for Bahen and the subsequent investigation under the diocesan decree on child protection.

The diocese issued a statement on Jan. 3 indicating the matter had been referred to the Jefferson County prosecuting attorney.

But Prosecutor Thomas Straus said no complaint had ever been filed with City Police.

Bahen graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1970 and has worked in the school's athletic department since 1979.

He served as head football coach at the high school from 1991 through 1994 when he resigned to take the head football coaching position at Edison High School.

Bahen returned to football coaching and teaching duties at Central in 2001.
