Pope Benedict has named Reverend Christopher Coyne to be the auxiliary bishop of Indianapolis, a move that would mean that Coyne is in line to become bishop there when Archbishop Daniel Buechlein, who has lymphatic cancer, either retires or passes away. This would not be news except that Coyne was the spokesman for Cardinal Bernard Law in 2002 when the child sexual abuse scandal erupted. Law resigned his position after the courts unsealed records relating to his inaction regarding child molesting priests.

Coyne became the face of the scandal while serving as Law's primary spokesman.

Coyne has served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston for nearly twenty-five years. Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston said of Coyne "Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein is indeed blessed to receive one of Boston's finest priests."

It should not be surprising that Benedict would make this move given the fact that he tends to believe that the scandal is the fault of the victims who are not shutting up and ignoring what occurred within the Church.

Executive Direct of SNAP, the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests, David Clohessy condemned the promotion for Coyne and said:

"It's irresponsible and callous for the Pope to promote one of disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law's top aides to be a bishop. It's thumbing your nose at the hundreds of men, women, and children who were sexually assaulted by Catholic clergy in Boston and Indianapolis."
