Guelph Police have charged a long-time priest with sexual assault in connection with an investigation into a complaint against a Catholic priest’s actions in Guelph in 1984.

The 67-year-old suspect was a priest at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at the time of the alleged crime.

He has also been a priest at several other parishes in the region, according to police.

Rev. James M. Boudreau was the parish priest at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Stoney Creek from 1989 to 1996.

According to the church website, "Father Boudreau became Pastor in 1989. He had been here to assist Father Papa before his ordination. This enthusiastic, outgoing pastor has worked successfully to pay off our mortgage and to improve our church. He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and his abilities as a preacher. He left the Barnabites in 1996 to become a Diocesan priest and is presently the pastor at St. John Church in Kitchener."

The Guelph Mercury reported that city police started the investigation in December. It was a case handled by the police service’s sexual assault child abuse unit.

The suspect has been released from custody. He is to appear in court in March.

Anyone with information that might assist police in relation to this matter is asked to call Sgt. Andrea Ninacs of the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212, ext. 329 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit online at: www.crimestoppers-wellington.com.
