The incident is alleged to have happened at the Guru Nanak Sikh temple in Otago street

A girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a priest during a religious service in Glasgow.

It has been claimed the girl was attacked during an evening service at the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Otago Street, Kelvinbridge.

Other members of the Sikh congregation passing by heard screams and called police and the priest was arrested.

A 52-year-old man was expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today in connection with the attack.

The alleged incident happened during a special religious ceremony lasting from Friday evening to Sunday morning.

One member of the Sikh community said: “Members of the congregation were passing by and heard shouting coming from a room.”

A police spokesman said: “A 52-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged indecency.”

The temple is named after the prophet Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion.

Sikh priests are known as granthis, who act as guides and interpreters of the Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib.

During religious festivals, this is read continuously from beginning to end, which takes about 48 hours.
