E-mails are now pouring in announcing that EWTN has acquired the National Catholic Register. The average Joe may not be familiar with NCR, but for religion writers like me it's been an indispensable source of news and analysis on issues impacting the Catholic Church. The 83-year-old weekly newspaper has been known in the past for its fierce editorial independence, often reporting on issues not always to the liking of church authorities. So it'll be interesting to see how ETWN's ownership affects that.
