Settlements reached in N.S. priest sexual abuse cases: lawyer

YARMOUTH, N.S. - A lawyer representing alleged victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests in southwestern Nova Scotia says settlements have been reached in half a dozen cases.

Paul Ledroit says six of eight claims were settled and the Yarmouth diocese agreed to pay out about $1.5 million in total.

Ledroit says the eight claims were filed by four men who allege they were abused as children by Rev. Adolphe LeBlanc, and by four women who said they were victims of Rev. Eddie Theriault.

Both priests are now dead.

Ledroit would not say which of the eight cases were settled.

He says the abuse is alleged to have occurred in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s in Digby and Yarmouth counties.

The Halifax archdiocese also confirms that some cases were settled in the diocese, but it wouldn't discuss specifics of those cases.

Ledroit says mediation in the settled cases began last Friday and ended Monday.

He says the victims ranged in age from three years old to about 15 or 16 during the time of the alleged abuse.

Ledroit says he remains hopeful the two other cases will be settled before a trial.
