The Archdiocese of Milwaukee says its employees' pension plans are underfunded.

Archdiocese spokesman Jerry Topczewski (top-CHES'-kee) told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he could not estimate the extent of the shortfall.

He says it affects only the 5,800 archdiocese employees and retirees, not schools, parishes or other participating employers. He blamed poor investment performance.

The archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 4. Officials said it took the step because pending sexual-abuse lawsuits would leave it with debts it couldn't afford.

The pension plan news came at a meeting Friday of the archdiocese and creditors, including clergy sex abuse victims and pension representatives.
