An elderly Bouctouche man was charged yesterday with a series of sex offences in Nova Scotia that date back decades.

Former Roman Catholic priest Albert LeBlanc, 81, is charged with 40 sex offences, including 11 counts of indecent assault on a male and 29 counts of gross indecency. The offences are alleged to have occurred between 1970 and 1985, when the accused was a Yarmouth County resident.

The charges relate to three male complainants, who were between the age of seven and 11 at the time. Their identities are protected by a court-imposed publication ban.

"The first complaint came in on April 19, 2010," said Nova Scotia RCMP Sgt. Brigdit Leger.

The accused was arrested earlier this month and released on an undertaking with specific conditions. He has a promise to appear in Yarmouth provincial court March 15.

Leger would not get into specifics about the initial complaint, or how the investigation expanded from one complainant to three, because the matter is before the court. She also refused to comment on LeBlanc's occupation while he lived in Yarmouth County, though it's being widely reported that he was a priest, who also coached minor hockey.

"The Privacy Act prevents us from discussing his current or past employment," she said, adding this is the RCMP's policy in all cases.

When asked if it's possible charges could be laid in relation to other complainants, the sergeant repeated that the 40 charges laid yesterday were the end result of the police investigation.
