The Archdiocese of Detroit announced Jan. 27 their discovery that a former Toledo priest, a man who was defrocked in 1992 after being accused of sexual abuse, has been serving as an organist at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores.

Herbert Richey was removed from priestly ministry in the Toledo diocese in 1992 and laicized in 1997. His removal from the Diocese of Toledo came after allegation arose that Richey molested eight children in that city. Formal charges were never brought against him, though.

Archdiocese of Detroit spokesman Ned McGrath said members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), went to the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit to notify them of Richey’s current position at the church, which is located on 13 Mile Road near Harper.

In 2002, the archdiocese learned that Richey had been working at St. Joseph’s parish in Trenton.

“Mr. Richey was immediately removed and ordered by the Detroit archdiocese not to work in any of its parishes or schools,” McGrath said in a prepared statement.

Members of SNAP, in their own prepared statement, said the church is “recklessly and secretly endangering kids” with their lax background check policy.

McGrath said the Archdiocese Review Board will “commence an investigation of this matter the intention of assuring this unacceptable situation does not happen again.”

On Jan. 28, a representative from St. Margaret of Scotland said church officials are not commenting on the situation. Richey has been released from service at the church
