The Roman Catholic Diocese of Owensboro is investigating possible sexual abuse allegations posted on the Internet by a man just before he fatally shot himself in a church parking lot, the bishop said Friday.

Owensboro police said David M. Jarboe, 23, was found in the grass at Blessed Mother Catholic Church around 7 a.m. Thursday. The Daviess County coroner's office said he died later that night.

Reporters from The Messenger-Inquirer were able to access the posts on Jarboe's Facebook page before they were taken down Thursday.

The newspaper said that on his page early Thursday, Jarboe had addressed three priests. He thanked one, forgave another and called the third "an evil man."

Jarboe said he hoped his message would prevent a child from having to endure what he called the "pain and torment" he had to go through, the newspaper reported.

Bishop William F. Medley issued a statement Friday afternoon saying, "In light of the information that has surfaced in his Facebook posting, the Diocese has begun an investigation in accord with diocesan policy."

Earlier, Medley told the newspaper he was unaware of abuse allegations and that he had only "secondhand information about this note that was posted."

"I feel like, at this point, I know that went to Facebook, but that should belong to the family," Medley said. "I visited with the family and prayed with them. ... Until there's a resolution of this in terms of his life, it is very, very difficult to comment."

Jarboe graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School in 2006. He was a linebacker for the school's football team and editor-in-chief of the school newspaper.

His website says he decided to attend the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and play football there. But because of the cold weather there, he decided to continue his studies at Western Kentucky University.
