A couple weeks ago, after we ran a story about a former local priest who was facing sexual abuse allegations in Massachusetts, one of our editors suggested that this was a story that we should cover.

I agreed.

But like many businesses, we often have to weigh, not only the news value of the story, but the expenseof the coverage. If we staffed the trial in Pittsfield, we might lose the services of a reporter for up to two weeks. It would also cost money to drive back and forth or to stay overnight.

We took a chance and reached out to editors at the Berkshire Eagle. We asked if we could have permission to run their coverage of the trial. There was no competitive issues, but it would be something extra that they would have to do to help us out. We would have understood if they said no.

Instead, they agreed to help us out and give us their court stories each day and any photos they took as well.

Much has been made of the hard times for newspapers, but it is cooperation like this, for the greater good of both of our communities, that gives me hope.

Thanks you again to all our fellow journalists at the Berkshire Eagle for helping us out.
