A retired Hunter Valley Catholic priest will face the district court next week after being committed to stand trial over historic child sex offences.

69-year-old Mayfield man Dennis Corrigan is charged with 17 sex offences dating back to the 1980s.

He's accused of indecently assaulting three boys while he was a priest at an old convent in Windale.

The charges include one count of sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 and under his authority.

Police charge sheets say Corrigan tongue kissed a 12-year-old boy and masturbated in front of another 15-year-old boy, while holding money for chores he had completed.

Corrigan has been charged by detectives from Strikeforce Georgiana set up to investigate several Hunter priests.

He has been committed to stand trial in Newcastle District Court.

His bail has been continued and he will face court again next week.
