A church janitor says he killed a New Jersey priest in 2009 because the cleric threatened to fire him if he ended their homosexual relationship, but prosecutors say he made up the story to hide his real motive.

They say the priest was preparing to fire the janitor, 65-year-old Jose Feliciano, after learning he was charged in 1988 with sexually touching a child.

The Rev. Edward Hinds was found dead in the St. Patrick's Church rectory in Chatham. Police tracking Hinds' missing cell phone learned it was discarded in a park by Feliciano's home in Easton, Pa.

The Daily Record of Parsippany reports that a judge is reviewing Feliciano's confessions to decide whether they can be used at trial or whether his rights against self-incrimination were violated.
