The Senate Courts of Justice Committee on Wednesday approved a number of House bills that closely aligned with Senate-sponsored legislation the panel approved in the first half of the 2011 General Assembly session.

Senators on the Democrat-controlled committee approved House Bill 1422, which would effectively allow homeowners subject to creditors to exempt one firearm from the process.

Senators also approved legislation that would greatly extend the statute of limitations to file civil claims of sexual abuse from the current two years to 20 years. House Bill 1476 had cleared the full House of Delegates with an extension from two to eight years, but senators amended the bill to increase the time frame to the 20-year limit that it approved earlier in the session.

Senate bill on elk

The House of Delegates Agriculture subcommittee approved a Senate measure that would add elk to the list of animals that can be killed by landowners whose crops or livestock are damaged by wild animals.

Senate Bill 868, sponsored by Sen. Richard H. Stuart, R-Westmoreland, stipulates that whenever deer, elk, and bears are damaging "agricultural operations," the landowner may request authorization from the director of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to kill the offending animal.

Statue of Jefferson

planned for Capitol

There is the Capitol itself and a bust, but no statue of Thomas Jefferson at the building he designed.

The Virginia Capitol Foundation announced Wednesday that it has commissioned a full-length bronze statue of the third president and former Virginia governor.

The sculpture will be placed in the new Capitol extension.

Three prominent Richmond business leaders, Tom Farrell, William Goodwin and Brent Halsey, will pay for the work.

Ivan Schwartz, co-founder of a firm that has completed 42 bronze statues, will do the work, which is scheduled for completion next year.
