Three men who once worked as priests in the Boston Archdiocese have been ousted from the priesthood by Pope Benedict XVI after being accused of sex abuse.

The Boston Archdiocese announced Friday that Frederick J. Cartier, Louis J. Govoni and Frederick Guthrie had been laicized.

Cartier was accused of molesting a teen in Woburn in the 1970s and left the archdiocese without permission in 1980.

Guthrie pleaded guilty after being charged in New Hampshire in 2001 with using a computer to solicit a minor.

Govoni has not been in ministry since 1978. Attorney Mitchell Garabedian said Govoni abused one of his clients in 1972 in Quincy.

Garabedian said the pope's action may help victims heal. But he said many feel it's too late and more should have been done to prevent the abuse.
