A Miami lawyer who specializes in civil lawsuits against pedophile priests filed a new case Wednesday against the Archdiocese of Miami, alleging former priest Neil Doherty molested a young boy on more than 50 occasions, starting in the late 1980s.

Jeffrey Herman has filed more than 20 such cases involving allegations against Doherty, of Lake Worth. He retired in 2002 after serving in the Catholic parishes of St Vincent's in Margate and St. Anthony's in Fort Lauderdale.

The archdiocese has denied any wrongdoing in its handling of Doherty.

Herman alleged in the lawsuit, filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, that Doherty drugged and sexually abused the boy, referred to as John Doe No. 71, more than 50 times over three years, starting in the late 1980s when the boy was 8 years old.

The suit seeks compensation of more than $5 million.

Doherty, 68, has been in jail in Broward County since November pending trial on criminal charges that he repeatedly drugged and raped another young boy in the 1990s.

Doherty was on house arrest since 2006 but was jailed after a judge ruled he had disconnected his electronic monitoring device several times in the prior year. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
