Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - A man named as the parish council chairman at St. Therese Catholic Church in Germantown, previously convicted of rape and added to a lawsuit, has since resigned from his volunteer duties at St. Therese Parish.

In 2007 Bruce Ewing, a former priest, was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl in the 1970s. Ewing, who also spent years working for the city as an aldermanic aide, is now on Kentucky's sex offender registry.

The Archdiocese of Louisville released this statement:

Bruce Ewing is a former priest who left active ministry in the 1977 and no longer functioned as a priest. He has been a member of St. Therese Church for many years, but has never been employed by the parish.

In recent years, he became involved on a volunteer advisory committee called the parish council, but he was not president of the council.

All employees and volunteers who work with children in Catholic parishes and schools must undergo background checks and participate in training. In Mr. Ewing's case, it was assumed that since he was not working with children, his volunteer service on the parish council was acceptable. Per our sexual abuse policies, this is not correct and will not continue.

Yesterday, Mr. Ewing submitted his resignation from his volunteer service with St. Therese Parish.
