A trial is just a few weeks away for a priest accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from two local churches.

Father Joseph Hai-Nguyen, 65, served at the Our Lady of Vietnam in Hampton and Our Lady of Lavang in Norfolk for eight years. He retired in October 2010 and moved to Texas.

That’s when an auditor hired by the Richmond Diocese found irregularities in the accounting. Hai-Nguyen was arrested in October, extradited back to Norfolk, and later released on bond.

13News obtained an affidavit that shows Hai-Nguyen wrote 36 unauthorized checks to himself and 47 checks to the Vietnamese Apostolate and Overseas Ministry of Vietnam. Investigators found those were not legitimate charities.

No one was available for comment at either Our Lady of Vietnam or Our Lady of Lavang.

Hai-Nguyen’s trial is scheduled for March 16.
