Here’s my full story on Father John Fiala from last Sunday’s paper.

It summarizes and details his work history as a Catholic priest who began his career in Omaha and later was arrested in Texas on charges of raping a 16-year-old boy.

After the teen sued last year and after he was arrested on criminal charges for this accusation, he was re-arrested in Dallas County last November on a charge of trying to hire a hitman to kill the teen.

Among the new information in the story is an affidavit by an Omaha businessman, which I also posted among PDF documents used for the story. The man said he got a call from the Ralston Police Department in suburban Omaha in 1988 that his son was stopped by an officer at midnight with Fiala. The son was in the priest’s lap inside a car at a city park, according to the document.

The man expressed anguish and anger that promises by Catholic hierarchs in 1988 after the incident were not followed through. Omaha archdiocesan officials said they have no record of this incident or meeting with the man in 1988 and expressed regret that they don’t.
