An ex-Catholic priest to be extradited to Ireland to face abuse charges

AN EX-PRIEST is to be extradited to Ireland from California to face sexual abuse charges.

Patrick Joseph McCabe (74) denies the charges, which relate to the sexual abuse of young boys in the 1970s and 1980s.

Judge Nandor Vadas ruled in court in Alameda, California, that McCabe should be sent to Ireland to face the charges, the Irish Times reports.

McCabe faces nine counts related to alleged assaults between 1973 and 1981. For the majority of those years he was working as a curate at the Pro-Cathedral on Marlborough Street in Dublin.

Two men made the claims and said they were between 10 and 14 years of age when the alleged offences took place.

In an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, an attorney handling his extradition described the evidence against the accused as "terrible".

McCabe spent most of the past 20 years working as as a social worker for the elderly but retired due to failing health.

The first official complaints against McCabe surfaced in 1988. He left the priesthood shortly after.

He was questioned in 2007 in the United States by Irish investigators about the abuse allegations.

McCabe denies all charges against him.
