A southwestern Illinois diocese's request that the state's highest court overturn a $5 million jury award to a former altar boy in an alleged priest-abuse case is drawing a rebuke from a regional priests' group.

The Southern Illinois Association of Priests believes the Diocese of Belleville should pay the 2008 award to James Wisniewski, now of Champaign.

The diocese appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court last week, more than a month after a state appellate court upheld the verdict in Wisniewski's favor.

Wisniewski sued in 2002 in St. Clair County, alleging the Rev. Raymond Kownacki sexually abused him for five years in the 1970s at St. Theresa's Parish in Salem, beginning when he was 13.

Kownacki has an unlisted telephone number and has refused to discuss the case publicly.
