INDIANAPOLIS — A former aide to disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law of the Archdiocese of Boston has been ordained as auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in ceremonies at a downtown Indianapolis church.

The Indianapolis Star reports 52-year-old Rev. Christopher Coyne will serve as the No. 2 official in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, assisting Archbishop Daniel Buechlein (BEEK'-line). Coyne was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in January.

Ten people from groups representing priest abuse victims stood in silent protest across the street from St. John the Evangelist Church while Coyne was ordained inside. They say Coyne, as spokesman for Boston archdiocese, must have known about cover-ups of priest sexual abuse and transfers of abusive priests to unsuspecting dioceses.

Buechlein is 72 and has been in poor health in recent years.
