More abusers have reported themselves to the Deetman commission which is investigating the sexual abuse of children within the Catholic church in the Netherlands.

The commission told Radio Netherlands Worldwide that it expects more abusers to report to it in response to an appeal made a number of weeks ago.

The chairman of the commission Wim Deetman met with the security and justice committee in parliament today to discuss whether an official hearing or inquiry should be held into the scandal to uncover more facts about the abuse.

The Deetman commission was set up in March last year to investigate sexual abuse within the Catholic Church between 1945 and the present day, after revelations by journalists from Radio Netherlands and NRC Handelsblad of widespread abuse by Dutch priests.

The commission has a list of 1000 abusers. It wants to abusers to report to it so that names can be checked to make sure they are not counted twice. They have until 4 April to report to the commission.
