NEW DELHI: 13-year-old Jiten (name changed), a student of class 8 at Basti posh Jupiter Academy, had shown remarkable presence of mind, said south district cops. It was because of his efforts that police were able to nab a priest's rescue of five children from his clutches.

Chairperson of the Lajpat Nagar Child Welfare Committee Raaj Mangal Prasad said the child showed "excellent presence of mind'' by calling up his uncle and telling him about his whereabouts when he got the chance.

On March 1, accused Prem Dass allegedly kidnapped Jiten from outside his school in Basti. "After prayers at school, he was going to the class when Dass met him and struck a conversation. Dass allegedly convinced the boy to come to Delhi by telling him how he can get better education in the capital of India. They boarded train to the capital from Ayodhya and changed it in Lucknow and in Moradabad in order to escape detection," said H G S Dhaliwal, DCP (south).

Dass did not give Jiten anything to eat and once they reached Delhi, the child was made to sleep on the floor on March 2. "Around 9am in the morning when Dass was not around, Jiten sensed trouble. He managed to make telephone call to his uncle in his village," Dhaliwal said.

Jiten's father, who is working as a workshop attendant with the H J Bhaba Industrial Training Institute of Delhi government, was told of the boy's call by his uncle and he called back on the priest's mobile where the priest owned up to the crime and even talked about his location. It was then that the father lodged a case with the Fatehpur Beri police station, leading to the arrest of Dass. The CWC has restored the child to his father.
