Victims of institutional abuse are being urged to speak with a special taskforce due to visit Derry.

The Executive taskforce has been set up to look into the issue of Historical Institutional Abuse and will host a meeting in Derry on Tuesday, March 22.

The team is seeking to consult directly with victims/survivors of institutional abuse to gauge opinion on how the process of investigating institutional abuse should work. All submissions are to be treated in confidence.

Derry man Jon McCourt, a spokesperson for the Survivors and Victims of Institutional Abuse Group - which lobbied for a full public inquiry into institutional abuse in the North - yesterday urged as many victims as possible to attend the meeting. He said it is important that survivors are made aware that the event does not form part of the investigation ordered by the Northern Ireland Executive recently but serves as exploratory process to help tailor the terms of reference for the formal investigation. "It's important that people know that this is a consultation to inform the drawing up of the terms of reference for the inquiry," he said.

Anyone who wishes to attend the event should call 028 90 528287 or email hiataskforce@ofmdfmni.gov.uk. Written responses can also be emailed by Monday, May 23.
