AUSTIN — An arrest warrant has been issued for a Hindu guru who failed to show up for sentencing after being convicted of molesting two girls as they grew up on his Central Texas ashram.

A Hays County jury found Prakashanand Saraswati guilty Friday of 20 counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Prakashanand, known to his devotees as Shree Swamiji, was released on a $1 million cash bond but failed to show up Monday in San Marcos for sentencing.

The judge then ordered the guru's bond revoked and issued the arrest warrant. He had already revoked Prakashanand's U.S. passport.

Jeff Kearney, Prakashanand's Fort Worth-based lead attorney, tells the Austin American-Statesman, "We don't know the reason for his absence."
