WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The first cases related to abuse by 1 of the nation's most prolific pedophiles are going to trial four years after a trove of pornographic slides and videos was found hidden inside his former Connecticut home.

Investigators say the late Dr. George Reardon abused hundreds if not thousands of children from the 1960s through the 1980s under the guise of a bogus growth study.

Jury selection began last week in the first of about 90 lawsuits against the Hartford-based hospital where Reardon practiced medicine for 30 years. The plaintiffs say the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center failed to protect them. The hospital has denied that it bears responsibility for the abuse.

Reardon was an endocrinologist. He died in 1998 without ever facing criminal charges.
