A BISHOP has apologised to 57 ex-pupils who say they were stripped, fondled and caned by a Catholic priest.

The Rt Rev Terence Brain said he was "shocked" by claims Monsignor Thomas Duggan, now dead, abused children in the 50s and 60s.

Rt Rev Brain, Bishop of Salford, said: "Abusive behaviour has no place within the church and I am deeply sorry for the pain reported."

But BBC's Mike Harding, 66, who exposed the alleged attacks at St Bede's College, Manchester, hit out at the "very guarded" apology.
