NEW YORK - Milwaukee's former Catholic archbishop, who now runs the US council of bishops, said the Church sex abuse scandal "needs to haunt us" while discussing that and other subjects during a national TV interview.

Former Milwaukee and current New York archbishop Timothy Dolan said that abuse by priests and some bishops' efforts to cover it up was, "nothing less than hideous, nothing less than nauseating."

That's what he told CBS' "60 Minutes."

He also explained that he doesn't want the church scandal to leave people's consciousness.

"In some ways, I don't want it to be over. This was such a crisis in the Catholic Church that in a way, we don't want to get over it too easily. This needs to haunt us."

When asked about whether bishops' efforts to cover up abuse was worse than the abuse itself, he responded "there's some truth in that, when you think the Church, of all, would know better.

"There's no denying that, it was a terrible thing. That's over with."

Dolan also addressed concerns about many challenges to the beliefs of the Catholic Church in terms of priest celibacy, male-only priests, and its teachings on abortion, birth control and gay marriage.

"I don't want to see changes in the Church when it comes to celibacy, or women priests, (or) our clear teaching about the sanctity of human life, the unity of marriage between one man and one woman."

There has also been discussion among many Catholics that Dolan could become the first American to receive the job of Pope.

"Unfortunately the people that say that also think the Mets are going to win the World Series," quipped Dolan, a Cardinals fan.

"I wouldn't put too much credibility in that one."
