AUSTIN — A federal marshal says a Hindu guru sentenced to 20 14-year prison terms for molesting two girls as they grew up on his Central Texas ashram is believed to be in Mexico.

Prakashanand Saraswati (prah-KAHSH'-ah-nahnd sah-rah-SWAH'-tee) failed to appear for his March 8 sentencing in San Marcos, and State District Judge Charles Ramsay issued a warrant for his arrest.

U.S. Marshal Hector Gomez told the Austin American-Statesman on Tuesday that the 82-year-old swami was believed to be hiding in Mexico with the help of his followers. He said the guru fled on March 6 and probably entered Mexico through the border city of Nuevo Laredo. Gomez said the guru is believed to be either still in Nuevo Laredo or in Monterrey, Mexico.
