A group representing victims of abuse within the Catholic Church claim the Diocese of Las Vegas is protecting a man accused of sexually assaulting a boy in the 1980s.

Members of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests protested outside of the diocese headquarters on Monday night in response to a civil lawsuit filed against Brother Tom Thing.

In the lawsuit, Las Vegan Tim Coonce accuses Thing of abusing him when Coonce attended St. Christopher's Catholic Elementary School in North Las Vegas.

Thing still lives in southern Nevada, but protesters claimed he is still allowed to be around children despite additional accusations of abuse in California.

"We have every reason to believe that that pattern is not going to stop,” said SNAP member Joelle Casteix. “I believe that kids are at risk here in Vegas now; and, that the Bishop needs to do everything in his power to alert local people that there is a serious risk."

A spokesman for the diocese was not immediately available for comment.
