A former Northeast Philadelphia altar boy on Monday became the fourth man in a month to sue the Archdiocese of Philadelphia over claims that it failed to stop a pastor from sexually abusing him.

The 32-year-old Arizona man, identified in court papers only as John Doe 168, says in the lawsuit that he was abused between 1988 and 1991 by Msgr. John Gillespie, then the pastor at Our Lady of Calvary Church along Knights Road.

Dan Monahan, one of the man's lawyers, said his client came forward after reading news accounts about a similar lawsuit filed two weeks ago by 31-year-old Philip Gaughan of Delaware, who says Gillespie also molested him as a boy.

According to the 2005 Philadelphia grand-jury report on sexually abusive clergy, archdiocesan leaders knew Gillespie had admitted molesting "several boys" during his career but waited until 2001 to remove him from ministry. He died in 2008. - John P. Martin
