Belfast - Judge directed jury to acquit James Doyle

A former Catholic priest from Dublin has been acquitted at a court in Belfast of sexually molesting a schoolgirl more than 30 years ago.

A judge directed the jury to acquit 61-year-old James Doyle of fifteen counts of indecent assault.

The judge ruled that the alleged victim's evidence had been innocently contaminated by another alleged victim.

Mr Doyle, from Lower Gardiner Street in Dublin, faced 20 further charges of indecent assault against a second girl.

However, the prosecution asked for those to be left on the books after telling the court the alleged victim did not feel able to give evidence against the former priest again.

All 35 charges against Mr Doyle were alleged to have occurred between 1976 and 1980 when the girls were between seven and ten years old.
