A religious guru who fled Hays County after being convicted of more than 20 counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact, is believed to be hiding in Mexico with the aid of his followers, U.S. Marshal Hector Gomez said Tuesday. Gomez said 82-year-old Prakashanand Saraswati, also known as Shree Swamiji, fled March 6 and probably crossed through the border city of Nuevo Laredo. He was later sentenced to 14 years in prison for each of 20 counts of molesting two girls who grew up at the Barsana Dham ashram in Driftwood.

Officials think he is either still in Nuevo Laredo or Monterrey. Gomez said Prakashanand is probably trying to solicit a pilot to fly him to India, but that could be difficult without his passport, which the court seized. "There are people that we've talked to who are devoted followers of his and they will sacrifice criminal charges and prosecution to help his flight," Gomez said. The biggest challenge, he said, is capturing Prakashanand before he enters his native India, where his extradition back to the United States might not be granted.
