The government is expected to publish a long-awaited report into the handling of clerical child abuse claims in the diocese of Cloyne by early May.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter is due to seek directions concerning publication of the report next month from the High Court.

Under the terms of the inquiry, Shatter has to seek the sanction of the High Court when publishing the report in its entirety or with some redactions.

It is anticipated that the identity of the priests who are named in the report will not be revealed, as was the case with clerics who were mentioned in the report into the handling of abuse in the Dublin archdiocese.

The commission of investigation was headed by Judge Yvonne Murphy, and was established by former justice minister Dermot Ahern to examine how the Cork diocese handled abuse claims between January 1996 and February 2009.

The report comprises 27 chapters, and relates to 19 clerics against whom complaints were made.

One or more of those chapters may be withheld, depending on the view taken by gardaí or the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the likelihood of any potential disruption to ongoing investigations.

Murphy delivered a final report to Ahern just before Christmas, but its publication was delayed due to a review by the DPP, James Hamilton, of allegations made against one priest.
