Statement by Joelle Casteix of Newport Beach CA, western regional director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (949 322 7434, jcasteix@gmail.com)

We may have never seen such immediate backsliding by Catholic prelate. Just a few short weeks ago, Rigali promised to do better with clergy sex cases. Now he suspends two credibly accused predator priests but won’t name them. If this didn’t involve the safety of kids, this would be laughable.

Whether retired or still working, whether in Philly or outside Philly – none of that matters. If these men are so potentially dangerous that Rigali won’t let them act as priests, why will Rigali let parents remain clueless about them?

Imagine a chemical company CEO announcing “Today we’ve determined there are two more potentially toxic dump sites where your kids might be seriously hurt but we’re not telling you where they are.”

It’s ironic that Rigali has told a fellow bishop, who presumably has no kids, about this potentially dangerous priest but not told parents, who do have kids, about him.

Frankly, one bishop telling another bishop about a credibly accused child molesting cleric is nothing new. That’s been going on for ages. But years ago, America’s bishops promised they’d start telling parishioners and the public about credibly accused clerics. Arrogantly, Rigali still refuses to do this.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
