VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has approved early retirement for Australian Bishop Michael Malone, who has said the years of coping with the sex abuse scandal in his diocese had simply worn him out.

Malone is retiring four years early at the age of 71. He will be replaced as bishop of Maitland-Newcastle by the Rev. William Wright, pastor of a Sydney church.

Last year, Malone issued an apology for the abuse crisis, admitting that at times he felt torn between his loyalty to the church, his priests and victims of abuse. But he said his priority was now to help the victims.

In an October interview with his diocesan magazine, Malone said dealing with the scandal had prevented him from being the pastor he had hoped to be, and that his job had taken an emotional toll.
