Testimony in a complex civil trial began on Tuesday in Superior Court in Waterbury in the case of late Dr. George Reardon.

Reardon, the former chief of endocrinology at St. Francis, was accused of abusing as many as 500 children after convincing their parents to enroll them in a human growth study.

Ninety people have filed a lawsuit claiming Reardon sexually assaulted them while he conducted medical research at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford and at his West Hartford home.

Reardon died in 1998, but the alleged abuse came to light in 2007 when a couple living in the doctor's former home found thousands of images of child pornography behind a wall in the basement.

The plaintiffs are asking for tens of millions of dollars in what's believed to be one of largest lawsuits of its kind. They claim that St. Francis Hospital failed to supervise Reardon, failed to stop the abuse and covered up the crimes.

St. Francis officials claim they knew nothing about the abuse and they never received a complaint until one was made to a state agency in the late 1980s.

This is the first of what could be several civil cases filed against the hospital in relation to Reardon.
