An extra $1.35 million in interest alone. That’s what the Belleville Catholic diocese will end up paying Jim Wisniewski of Champagne, on top of the $5 million awarded him in 2008 by a St. Clair County jury. Wisniewski was repeatedly molested as a boy by now-retired Fr. Raymond Kownacki. There’s still a chance,of course, that church officials will win the recent “Hail Mary” appeal of that verdict to Illinois’ highest court. But last month, in another blow to Bishop Edward Braxton, Wisniewski’s lawyer Mike Weilmuenster prevailed over Braxton’s barrister David Wells before Judge Lloyd Cueto, who quietly ruled that the diocese must purchase a new security bond to cover the entire $6.3 milion sum.
