A Belgian Catholic bishop who resigned last year after admitting he sexually abused a boy in the 1980s cannot be prosecuted because the offence took place too long ago, the prosecutor, Jean-Marie Berkvens, said Monday.

Roger Vangheluwe, 74, quit in April 2010 after confessing he had sexually abused a boy when he was bishop of Bruges.

Berkvens will say more about the case and whether Vangheluwe could be prosecuted for other offences, toward the end of April, he said.

The Belgian parliament on Wednesday asked the church to compensate the victims independently.
