CINCINNATI (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI has named an assistant bishop for southwest Ohio, the first in four years for the 19-county Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Officials for the archdiocese said Wednesday that the Rev. Joseph Binzer will help out Archbishop Dennis Schnurr as auxiliary bishop. Schnurr says in a statement that Binzer is an excellent administrator and a priest of great simplicity and compassion.

The archdiocese has not had an auxiliary bishop since the last one retired in 2007.

Binzer is a 55-year-old Cincinnati native who worked for 11 years as a certified public accountant before he entered the seminary in 1988.
